Until lately the acai berry, was unfamiliar to most parts of the modern world. However, the natives of Brazil have been using this wonder food for centuries. It gives them with nutrition and energy.
The history of acai berry finds itself deep rooted in the folk- lore of the people of Amazon and the modern countries that now have their habitat in that area. According to a legend the acai berry saved a native tribe living in the rainforests of Amazon and from then this berry found its place.
Pronounced as ‘ah-sigh-ee’ the acai berry has been in existence for many years. The berry did not find its place in the modern world until the 1990s. The Amazonian tribes used the berry to fight against many ailments, enhance the immune system, fight infection and protect the heart.
The acai berry is a product of a palm tree having a thin long trunk that grows up to 25m high. There are groups of branches on the top and ribbon-like leaves hang from them. These branches at the top have acai berries hanging from them in clusters. Traditionally the berries were picked by hand where the tribesmen would climb up the tree and sever the branches rich with acai berries, from the top.
Nearly 20 kg of fruit is produced by a typical acai palm tree annually. Now that the acai berry has obtained importance it has become the most sought after fruit. Hence it is not practical to hand pick each individual berry.
The natives of Brazil have started mass producing the berry. Also the berry has a life span of just 24 hours so it is important to retain the properties of the fruit. So as soon as the berries are picked they are loaded into boats to be sent to the centers where they are blended into various products.
